Container Ship Phoenix J Runs Aground West of Rauma, Finland

On April 18 container ship Phoenix J run aground west of Rauma, Gulf of Bothnia, after leaving Rauma Port.

Reportedly, the vessel is hard aground and its double bottom tank has been broken. There are leaks in the ballast tanks and cargo holds.

“The ship’s ballast tanks have been breached and water has leaked into the hold. Therefore the vessel remains more firmly aground, and there is no danger of sinking or tilting,” said Group Manager of Esa Island Traffic Safety Agency.

The vessel had 15 crew members on board, no one was injured.

The reason for the stranding is still unknown.

The container vessel Phoenix J, managed by Jungerhans Maritime Services GmbH (Germany), was on the way from Rauma to Gävle in Sweden when it hit the shoal.
