Containerships to hire new shipbuilder for LNG-powered vessels

Finnish cargo company, Containerships, said in its interim report it has delayed the delivery of its first LNG-powered containership to early 2018 due to a change of the shipyard.

The company has entered negotiations with new shipyards for the construction of the two company-own-financed vessels and two other vessels, the report shows.

Initially, the ships were to be built by Yangzhou Guoyu Shipbuilding in China.

The first two 1,400 TEU containerships were scheduled for delivery in 2016 with Containerships’ with the remaining two vessels to be delivered in 2017. However, the change of shipyard has seen the company delay the delivery.

Containerships said in September last year that it would consider purchasing the two vessels ordered by GNS Shipping, a joint venture between Guoyu Group and Nordic Hamburg Group.

The initial order, placed in May 2014 included an option for two additional vessels bringing the total up to six LNG-powered short-sea ships. The vessels are to be managed by Arkon.
