Core samples from Statoil-operated appraisal well 16/2-15 in PL 265 on the Johan Sverdrup discovery have confirmed oil, Det Norske, partner in the production licence, today announced.

Since the drilling operations in the reservoir section, conducted by the Ocean Vanguard rig, are in an initial phase, final results are not yet available, said the company in a press release.

Johan Sverdrup is one of the largest discoveries made on the Norwegian continental shelf (NCS) since the mid 1980s. First oil from the field is expected to start flowing in the last quarter of 2018. Other partners in PL 265 are Petoro and Lundin Petroleum.

The discovery, previously known as Aldous/Avaldsnes, was renamed Johan Sverdrup in January 2012. Johan Sverdrup was the leader of the political movement that led the introduction of a parliamentary system in Norway and is an important symbol of the emergence of a democratic Norway. He was the first Prime Minister of Norway after the introduction of parliamentarism. Sverdrup was Prime Minister from 1884 to 1889.
