CSPL’s Freight Volumes Up in First Nine Months of 2016

Hong Kong-based terminal operator COSCO SHIPPING Ports Limited recorded a 3.9% increase in its total container throughput for the nine months ended September 30, 2016, with the group’s terminals handling 70.2 million TEUs, compared to 67.6 million TEUs in the same period last year.

The group’s terminals in China, Hong Kong and Taiwan handled a total of 60.6 million TEUs in the first three quarters of this year, against 60.1 million TEUs in the period ended September 30, 2015, representing an increase 0.9% and accounting for 86.3% of the group’s total throughput, respectively.

Of which, terminal companies in mainland China handled a total of 57.5 million TEUs in the first nine months of 2016, compared to 56.8 million TEUs in the same period in 2015.

The container throughput of overseas terminals rose 28.5% to 9.6 million TEUs from 7.5 million TEUs.

Furthermore, the group’s equity throughput increased by 4.6% to 21.8 million TEUs from 20.8 million TEUs, including the volumes of Kumport Terminal in Turkey and Busan KBCT Terminal in Korea.

The total throughput of bulk cargo for the period was 62.5 million tons, against 60.1 million tons in the first nine months of 2015, an increase of 3.9%.

In addition, a total of 438,156 vehicles were handled during the nine-month period this year, compared to 332,040 vehicles in the same period last year.

The terminal operator saw a 19.87% decrease in the profit for the nine-month period, which went down to USD 239.1 million from USD 298.5 million recorded in 2015.

The company’s operating profit for the period ended September 30, 2016, amounted to USD 93 million, compared to USD 112.6 million seen in 2015.
