Daewoo Hosts 40th Anniversary Celebration

Daewoo Shipbuilding and Marine Engineering (DSME) has celebrated the 40th anniversary of its foundation. Under an official title of ‘Beyond the miracle of Okpo harbor’, the ceremony was attended by some 1,800 managers at every class in company.

40 years ago, the construction of the world’s largest shipyard was envisioned as part of the Korean government’s initiative to further its heavy and chemical industries. However, the construction was delayed due to the oil crisis of 1973. In 1991, new management (Daewoo) was finally able to complete this historic project.

From the 1980’s through to the 2000’s, DSME was faced with numerous obstacles in its quest to achieve growth in scale, advancement in technology, diversification of the range of products, increase in profitability, and harmonious relations between labor and management. Nevertheless, DSME prevailed and was reborn as a prominent shipbuilding and marine engineering company.

Today, DSME receives the highest recognition from its clients for its ability to produce good quality ships and offshore products and has achieved state of the art production system technologies, advanced research and development systems, and highly efficient management capabilities. Following its vision ‘World Leader in Ocean Technology’, DSME has pledged to continue its pursuit of achieving excellence by responding to the clients’ support and trust.
