DataCo Completes Kumul Submarine Cable System 2

PNG DataCo (DataCo) has completed the second, out of three systems of the Kumul submarine cable network.

The System 2 landed at Alotau, connecting three branching units, Lae, Popondetta and Alotau.

Kumul submarine domestic fiber cable network is a national backbone transmission network that intends to provide high speed capacity to coastal centres and more remote coastal centres of Papua New Guinea.

The Kumul submarine cable consists of three systems, System 1 connecting Jayapura to Arawa with seven branching units connecting to Vanimo, Wewak, Lorengau, Madang, Kimbe, Kavieng and Kokopo.

System 2 connects Madang to Pom with three branching units, while System 3 links Daru and Kerema to the existing branching units in LNG system.

The construction of the cable started in 2017 and it’s planned to be completed by the end of 2019.

The System 1 and System 3 are planned to be finalized in December.

The submarine cable network will provide additional interconnection points to international submarine cables in Madang, Vanimo and Jayapura (Indonesia) resulting in more reliable international telecommunication services for PNG.
