Date Set for Launching of TOTE’s 2nd LNG Container Ship

The world’s second LNG-powered container ship, known as TOTE 2, is scheduled to be launched at the end of this month, the ship’s builder General Dynamics NASSCO informed on Tuesday.

The launching ceremony is scheduled for August 29th at NASSCO’s San Diego yard when the name of the new ship will be revealed.

The ship will be christened by Emma Engle, a third-generation shareholder of Saltchuk. TOTE is one of six business units in the Saltchuk family of companies.

NASSCO christened and launched the world’s first container ship powered by LNG at its shipyard in San Diego on April 18.

The Marlin class vessels, being built for the shipping company TOTE, will reduce sulfur dioxide (SOx) emissions by 98 percent, particulate matter (PM) by 99 percent, nitrous oxide (NOx) and carbon dioxide (CO2) by 71 percent over TOTE’s ships currently operating in Puerto Rico.

The Marlins, which will home port in Jacksonville, Florida, will enter service in late 2015 and early 2016.
