Denmark: Heavy Lift Vessels Call at Port of Esbjerg with Wind Turbines on Board

Two large heavy lift vessels recently called into the Port of Esbjerg. The vessels were to transport wind turbines for two projects in which Blue Water Shipping is involved.

The m/v Spiegelgracht called into Esbjerg for the loading of 10 complete Vestas wind turbines destined for Curacao in the Dutch Antilles.

21 Vestas wind turbines destined for Portland in the south east of Australia were loaded onboard the m/v Deltagracht. The wind turbines are part of a large order totaling 140 wind turbines, which Blue Water Shipping is contracted to ship in connection with the erection of Australia’s largest wind farm on land close to the city of Macarthur. The first turbines were shipped from Esbjerg in September 2011, and the final shipment is expected to take place in Mid 2012.

Both vessels are from the Dutch shipping line Spliethoff, and Blue Water Shipping was responsible for the handling, loading and port agency for both. Blue Water Shipping is also responsible for the sea transport with the m/v Deltagracht.

“Transport of wind turbines demands great expertise, both in respect of the land transport and the sea transport, as the units are large and complex. The actual handling in connection with the storage, loading and unloading must also take place following exact guidelines to protect the individual parts from damage. Over the past 16 years, Blue Water Shipping has gained significant expertise and knowledge with the different types of transport and logistics assignments for the wind turbine industry”, says Shipbroker Soren Stougaard from Blue Water Shipping, who noted that everything went as planned during the two ports of call.
