Desso Gets Environmental Initiative Category Award at Seatrade Europe 2011, Germany

At the presentation of the fifth edition of the Seatrade Insider Awards – on 27 September during the Seatrade Europe 2011 convention in Hamburg, Germany – Desso was honored as a runner up in the category for the Environmental Initiative Award.

Desso, renowned for its innovation strategy and design, was shortlisted for introducing Torso 4C’s; the first 100% recyclable and IMO certified carpet tile for cabins in the marine industry. The combination of sustainability and a commercially attractive solution in one product, was what convinced the jury to nominate Desso for this Award.

Torso 4C’s is the first Cradle to Cradle carpet for the maritime industry. This means that after usage, the carpet can be completely disassembled to raw materials that can be reused in new carpet, over and over again, without compromising on quality. Furthermore, breaking with tradition, Torso 4C’s is available as a carpet tile instead of broadloom, making it easy to transport, store and install.

Desso is proud to be presented as a runner up out of a total of 80 submissions for the Seatrade Insider Awards. The jury consisted of 16 cruise experts, including Christine Duffy (CEO of CLIA), Tony Heuer (president of Fidelio Cruises) and Tony Peisley (director of Peisley Cruise Analysts).

Roland Jonkhoff – Managing Director Hospitality, Marine and Aviation of Desso – commented on the award: “For Desso, sustainability is a total quality issue: the use of pure and safe materials of which the composition is entirely defined. This results in a better product, with the additional advantage that it can be disassembled and reused. In the case of Torso 4C’s we have added another functionality by creating a carpet tile for the marine industry. An excellent example of how Desso keeps innovating. We’re happy with the recognition it received with this honorable mention at the Seatrade Insider Awards, and would like to congratulate our fellow nominee Holland America Line and of course Carnival Cruises for winning the Award.”
