DONG Energy Selects Monopiles for All Hornsea Project One Foundations

DONG Energy has decided to use monopile foundations on the remaining 58 foundations for the Hornsea Project One offshore wind farm.

In November 2016 DONG Energy announced that EEW SPC would provide 116 monopile foundations for Hornsea Project One.

In addition, in early 2017 the company informed that 116 transition pieces would be provided by Bladt Industries with Offshore Structures Britain, and Steelwind with Wilton Engineering.

After the decision on the remaining 58 foundations, supply contracts including the ones for transition pieces are in the advanced stages of negotiation.

“Hornsea Project One, which will become the biggest wind farm in the world, is a large-scale construction project, and the needs of the project, including timescales, have led to DONG Energy taking the decision to use the same monopile/transition piece foundation solution for all turbines. This decision optimizes the execution of the project, and helps ensure it will be built on time,” the company said.

Due to be operational in 2019, Hornsea Project One will have a capacity of more than 1 GW.

The wind farm, with 174 wind turbines in total, will be installed off the Yorkshire (UK) coast covering an area of 407 km².
