Dong Orders JDR’s Inter-Array Cables for Race Bank

Dong Energy has awarded a contract to supply subsea power cables for the Race Bank offshore wind farm to UK-based company JDR.

For this contract, JDR will design and manufacture 110 kilometres of 36 kV inter-array cables and provide offshore testing and termination services. The scope of work also includes the supply of accessories including hang-offs, electrical t-connectors and cable cleats, and the entire system will be manufactured from JDR’s facility in Hartlepool, UK.

The frame agreement, which was signed on JDR’s stand at Global Offshore Wind in London today, states that JDR will manufacture array cables, connectors and hang-offs, and provide termination and testing for a minimum of three offshore wind projects.

JDR will work in collaboration with DONG Energy to enhance current designs and develop new technologies and processes to improve the quality and price of subsea power cables through the life of the frame agreement.

Thomas Karst, Senior Programme Director for Race Bank, said: “Race Bank is an exciting project that will feature up to 91 turbines and could power over 400,000 UK homes. We needed a partner for subsea power cables with a reputation for high-quality design and reliable delivery in harsh offshore environments, and JDR’s experience gives us just that.

“We are committed to investing in the UK and it’s great to award a significant contract like this to a UK-based company.”

Amber Rudd, Energy and Climate Change Secretary, commented: “This is great news for Hartlepool and another success story for the UK’s offshore wind supply chain as we continue with our long-term plan to back business, create jobs and build a Northern Powerhouse.

“Thanks to Government policies, the UK is the best place in the world to invest in offshore wind. We’re developing the sector’s full potential at the lowest cost for hard-working bill payers, ensuring that UK-based manufacturers like JDR are well placed to win renewable energy contracts at home and overseas.”

David Currie, CEO, JDR, added: “We are delighted to have cemented our relationship with DONG Energy, a global leader in offshore wind, and look forward to supporting them in the supply for Race Bank and the ultimate success of their project. We have pioneered the development of subsea inter-array cables and we are thrilled to be a key partner in driving the next phase of offshore wind energy production in Europe”.
