DP World Completes Work on Phase 1 of Expansion at Spanish Port in Tarragona

Global marine terminal operator DP World announced the successful completion and official opening of Phase 1 of the expansion of its Spanish terminal, DP World Tarragona. Three Super Post-Panamax cranes capable of handling vessels with a nominal capacity of over 13,800 TEU (twenty foot equivalent container units) were also commissioned, adding to the two Panamax cranes and harbour crane already in use and boosting the terminal’s overall efficiency. The facility has a mooring line of over 800 m and a rail terminal.

The commissioning of the new quay, yard and cranes took place during a ceremony attended by some 350 people, including José Blanco, Spain’s Development Minister, José Montilla, President of the Autonomous Government of Catalan Province, where DP World Tarragona is located, and Flemming Dalgaard, DP World’s Senior Vice President and Managing Director for Europe & Russia, as well as customers and partners.

Mohammed Sharaf, Chief Executive Officer, DP World, said: “We are delighted to be able to offer customers improved efficiency and increased capacity at DP World Tarragona. The new yard and cranes have transformed Tarragona from a small terminal in development to a modern, efficient facility capable of handling the world’s largest ships. With the growth of Tarragona will also come new opportunities for the local communities and economies.”

Flemming Dalgaard, Senior Vice President and Managing Director, Europe & Russia, said:

“We are very proud that DP World Tarragona is becoming a key operating facility for us in the Western Mediterranean Sea. With the growing industrial port-hinterland and good links to Madrid, Barcelona and the surrounding Catalan region, DP World Tarragona stands ready to serve the growing logistics operations there.”
