DSME Workers Strike Over Unpaid Wages

A number of unionized workers at South Korea’s Daewoo Shipbuilding & Marine Engineering (DSME) organized industrial action on Tuesday and Wednesday after the company missed a previously agreed deadline to pay KRW 20 billion (USD 17.7 million) of delayed wages, according to local media.

Back in March, DSME agreed to pay the delayed ordinary wages by July 7, following a court procedure.

However, the shipbuilder informed the union that it would postpone payments because of the lack of operating cash flows.

DSME owes each employee around KRW 3 million (USD 2,650).

The workers reportedly returned to work yesterday, and the management of the company and the union representatives are currently engaged in negotiations.
