EEW SPC to Construct All Hornsea Project One Monopiles

DONG Energy has awarded EEW Special Pipe Constructions GmbH (EEW SPC) with a contract to manufacture all monopiles for the 174-turbine offshore wind farm, the 1.2GW Hornsea Project One.

DONG initially planned to use 116 monopile foundations and 58 suction bucket foundations on the wind farm. The Danish company subsequently decided to use only monopile foundations for the project.

The companies previously announced a contract for 116 monopiles in November 2016, and this contract has now been extended to cover all 174 foundations for what will become the biggest wind farm in the world.

Each monopile foundation has a diameter of up to 8.1m and weighs approximately 900 tons.

“Hornsea Project One will be the first wind farm in the world to have a capacity of more than 1GW and will provide enough energy for well over one million UK homes,” Claus Nørgaard, Engineering, Procurement and Construction Director for the project, said.

”Using the same foundation solution for all turbines means we benefit from economies of scale and experience, and therefore maximise efficient construction of the project. We are very pleased that DONG Energy placed their trust in EEW SPC again. This demonstrates the excellent relationship between our companies and we are looking forward to contributing in bringing this project to success.” emphasizes Michael Hof, COO/Managing Director at EEW SPC.”

Hornsea Project One will be located 120km off the Yorkshire Coast. Onshore works began in 2016 and offshore construction will begin in late 2017. The project is due to be completed in 2020.
