Eimskip’s Containership Suffers Steering Glitch

Eimskip’s containership M/V Lagarfoss experienced a malfunction on Wednesday evening while en route to Reykjavik, some 70 nautical miles south east of the Icelandic coast.

The Icelandic shipping company said that the malfunction occurred in the vessel’s steering gear while under way.

However, there was no danger to crew, cargo or the vessel as the weather conditions were favorable.

The ship’s crew contacted the Icelandic Coast Guard to assist the containership to her destination under her own power.

The Coast Guard vessel Thor met with M/V Lagarfoss in the morning of 22nd July to assist the ship to Reykjavik where M/V Lagarfoss is expected to arrive today.

Based on the latest vessel tracking data from Marine Traffic the ship is under tow around 90 nautical miles from Rejkjavik.

“During a recent guarantee dry-docking of the vessel in Hamburg the manufacturer of the steering gear decided to replace parts in the gear, which was upon their own decision making and demand.  It is highly likely that the malfunction is the responsiblity of the gear manufacturer and entirely their responsibility,” Eimskip said in a press statement.

“Upon the vessel’s arrival repairs will immediately commence and we hope she will be on schedule again without much delay,” the company added.

The 11,811-ton containership was built in 2014 and sails under the flag of Antigua Barbuda.
