The Barnacle field lies in the Northern North Sea in the United Kingdom Continental Shelf, (UKCS) Blocks 211/29 and 211/30. Equinor is the operator of the field and ExxonMobil and Spirit Energy are its partners.

While the field is located on the UK side of the North Sea, the production is going through the Statfjord B platform, which is located in the Norwegian sector. The water depth at Statfjord B is 149 metres.

A spokesperson for Equinor told Offshore Energy Today that this is one well tied back from the UK shelf to the Statfjord B platform on the Norwegian side and that around 2 million barrels are expected to be recovered.

The reservoir was developed by extended reach drilling well from Statfjord B. The production from the Barnacle well will continue until cessation of production from Statfjord B, which is currently expected in 2025.

Barnacle is Equinor’s third UK field startup this year, following Mariner in August and Utgard in September.

The Mariner field, located in the UK North Sea, is expected to produce more than 300 million barrels of oil over the next 30 years.

The Utgard field is spanning the Norwegian-UK border in the North Sea. Recoverable resources are estimated at around 40 million barrels of oil equivalent (boe) and daily production on plateau will be around 43,000 boe.

The field development consists of two wells from a subsea template tied back to the Sleipner field by a pipeline and an umbilical. The template is installed on the Norwegian side of the border, with one well on each side.
