Fincantieri Lays Keel for Viking Cruises’ New Ship

Fincantieri Lays Keel for Viking Cruises' New Ship

Fincantieri Marghera yard yesterday held a keel laying ceremony for Viking Cruises’ first-ever ocean vessel, the Viking Star.

This shipbuilding project adds a major new brand to Fincantieri’s list of cruise ship customers. The contract for the “Viking Star”, signed last year, includes the construction of a second ship scheduled for delivery in 2016.

Viking Star will have a gross tonnage of about 47,800 tons and 464 cabins with accommodation for 944 passengers. The ship has been designed by SMC Design of London, while Rottet Studio in Los Angeles has been engaged to design its interior, where special attention will be paid to elegance and style.

The vessel, classified by the Lloyd’s Register, features an overall length of 745.4 ft. (227.2m), beam of 94.5 ft. (28.8 m) and a draft of 20.7 ft. (6.3 m).

Viking Star is slated for delivery in early 2015.
