First Tower Sections for Burbo Bank Extension Reach Belfast

First Tower Sections for Burbo Bank Extension Arrive in Belfast

The first tower components for the 258MW Burbo Bank Extension project have begun arriving at MHI Vestas’ pre-assembly site in the Belfast Harbour.

The middle tower sections which arrived this week will support the 32 MHI Vestas V164-8.0 MW wind turbines at the Burbo Bank wind farm located in Liverpool Bay, west of the existing 90MW Burbo Bank OWF.

DONG Energy, the owner and developer of the wind farm, signed a contract with MHI Vestas for the supply, installation and commissioning of the wind turbines, as well as a five-year, full-scope service contract.

The project is expected to enter the offshore construction phase in June with the installation of the export cable, turbine foundations and the offshore substation. July is reserved for the installation of the offshore cable array.

The first of 32 MHI Vestas 8MW turbines will be installed in September, and commissioning is expected to be completed in 2017.

The two companies recently carried out a practice installation of Burbo Bank test tower and foundation replicas onshore.
