FMC to Build First Fishing Trawlers in Bangladesh

FMC Dockyard Ltd. (subsidiary of FMC Group) is about to pioneer construction of fishing trawlers in Bangladesh, with a four unit order under construction at its shipyard, scheduled for delivery to a local buyer already in January.

According to the Financial Express, with the launching of indigenous built trawlers , FMC Group will be able to lower the procurement prices and thus attract buyers, competing shoulder by shoulder with Chinese and Thai shipyards whose products are more expensive.

The shift toward domestically manufactured trawlers has also been provoked by the fact that foreign suppliers tend to breach deadlines and incur financial losses on companies that place the orders, as it was the case with Thai ship builders.

We have undertaken initiatives to construct fishing trawlers at our technologically-equipped dockyard. We are using advanced equipment imported from Europe and the USA. We hope the trawlers will be of high quality while they will be cost effective for the local buyers,” Managing Director of the FMC Group Yasin Chowdhury said.

Other companies are likely to follow in FMC Group’s footsteps such as Western Marine Shipyard, which has several orders due in 2013, owing to the expected growing of demand for trawlers since the country has gained rights over the Bay of Bengal.
