Germanischer Lloyd's Fleet Exceeds 100Mgt with More Than 7200 Ships

Germanischer Lloyd’s fleet now exceeds 100Mgt, with more than 7200 ships. The figure repesents a doubling of the GL-classed fleet in little over six years. The ship which saw German classification society break the 100 million mark was shipping company Hamburg Süd’s 85 676gt Santa Rosa.

Containerships make up 68% of the GL fleet. The rest comprise multi-purpose vessels (10%), bulk carriers (9%) and tankers (7%). GL also classifies ferries, cruiseships, offshore supply vessels and wind turbine installation ships, as well as mega-yachts and leisure boats.

In the first eight months of 2011 alone, total gross tonnage rose by seven million tons.
