Germany: Elbe River Dredging to Bring Bigger Vessels to Hamburg

Elbe River Dredging to Bring Bigger Vessels to Hamburg

The biggest cargo ship in the world, the “CMA CGM Marco Polo”, arrived into Hamburg harbour for the first time, reports thelocal.de.

Built by DSME (Daewoo Shipbuilding and Marine Engineering) in South Korea, the giant of the seas displays exceptional dimensions: 396 meters long, 54 meters wide, with a draft of 16 meters.

This is a great milestone for the German harbour, but on the other hand, if the Marco Polo were full of containers, it would skim the bottom of the Hamburg harbour.

If the Elbe River dredging project receives the green light, the Marco Polo would be able to arrive in Hamburg bearing all 16,020 containers, according to thelocal.de.

The Marco Polo’s visit to Hamburg signals the beginning of regular visits for the giant vessel there.
