Germany: Hamburg Süd Orders Installations of DTA System from Eniram

Eniram Ltd, provider of dynamic decision support systems for the shipping industry, announced today that Hamburg Süd have ordered 12 additional installations of Eniram’s Dynamic Trimming Assistant (DTA) and will deploy the fuel and emission saving technology on all of their post-Panamax container vessels, by the end of Q3 this year. The proven savings from several vessels already equipped with the Eniram system has led Hamburg Süd to place this follow on order.

Hamburg Süd was the first container line to install the DTA system, helping vessel crews optimise trim for greatest efficiency and therefore lowest fuel and emissions. Since late 2008, they have seen significant reductions (on average 3%) in the bunker consumption of vessels equipped with DTA, in comparison to non-DTA equipped sister ships. These sister vessels were operating on the same route giving a very accurate fuel consumption benchmark with which to prove the DTA savings.

The measured savings were in line with the savings predicted by the DTA system. The wider installation of DTA will help, along with other initiatives, to address the requirement for a transparent ”green supply chain” that customers increasingly demand. It is expected that over 50,000 tons of CO2 every year will be saved across the post-panamax fleet. Further vessels will be fitted with DTA as they arrive in 2012, giving even greater fuel and emissions savings in future.

Hamburg Süd continues to invest in new, larger and more environmentally-friendly vessels, and will receive 5 new 7,100 TEU “Santa” Class vessels this year, and 3 next. All of these ships will be equipped with DTA once they are launched. “Over the past 12 months, we have consistently seen significant fuel savings on all vessels on which we have installed DTA. As we have sister vessels sailing on the same routes, it is possible to see the reduction in bunker consumption that dynamic trimming has made on those vessels equipped with the Eniram system. We see this system as a ‘must-have’ on any new vessels entering our fleet to ensure that they are as efficient and environmentally friendly as possible. As a result, all of the new 7,100 TEUs vessels, the biggest in our fleet, will be fitted with DTA as they enter service,” explained Mr. Fred Deichmann, Managing Director, Columbus Shipmanagement, Hamburg Süd’s vessel management division.

“Hamburg Süd has been at the forefront of adopting technologies, such as DTA, that continue to help them achieve their long term sustainability goals. This further roll out of DTA for all vessel new builds is testament to the proof of fuel savings and environmental benefits realised. We will continue to work very closely with Hamburg Süd during the installation process and we look forward to strengthening our relationship with them in the future” announced Mr. Philip Padfield, CEO, Eniram.
