GNF and BHP Sign Chile LNG Deal

Gas Natural Fenosa (GNF) said it has signed a long-term contract with Chilean firm Minera Escondida, operated by BHP Billiton, to supply liquefied natural gas to the Mejillones terminal in northern Chile.

Under the agreement, Gas Natural Fenosa will deliver the LNG from its global portfolio, including from Cheniere’s Sabine Pass liquefaction plant which is currently under construction in Louisiana, USA.

Gas Natural Fenosa will supply the LNG to the Mejillones terminal from 2016, when BHP’s nearby Kelar power plant, currently under construction, is due to be ready.

The electricity generated by the station will supply the growing demand from Escondida and BHP Billiton’s other operations in the Atacama desert,” the company said in a statement.
