Gondan Bags $72m Research Vessel

Spanish shipbuilder Astilleros Gondan has won a contract to build ”New Dr. Fridtjof Nansen” research vessel for the Institute of Marine Research (Havforskningsinstituttet) of Norway.

The shipbuilder announced on Monday that it had been awarded the $72.7 million contract after winning a public tender.

Skipsteknisk AS completed the preliminary vessel drawings back in 2012, with the official contract signed on March 12th 2013. The new ship will be built under the ST-369 design.

The future RV ”Dr. Fridtjof Nansen”, to be owned by the Norwegian Foreign Aid Directorate (Norad) and operated by IMR, will replace current ”Dr. Fridtjof Nansen” in order to perform ecosystem approach to fisheries projects in developing countries in Africa, Asia and Latin America.

Delivery of the vessel is scheduled for February 2016.
