Great News for West Shore Levee Project

Congressman Cedric Richmond (LA-02) released the following statement after the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers (Corps) confirmed that it was fully funding the West Shore Hurricane Protection Project through completion of the study phase:

“Since coming to Congress, I have been working to move the West Shore Levee Project forward,” said Rep. Cedric Richmond. “Hurricane Isaac showed how vulnerable the River Parishes are to storm flooding, and since then I have pushed the Administration to make West Shore priority number one. Today’s announcement means we have the money to complete the study, a pivotal step toward construction.”

Rep. Richmond held a conference call in April with the Corps’ highest ranking civilian leader to urge her to allocate the full amount necessary to complete the West Shore Levee study. In May, Rep. Richmond held a town hall in St. John the Baptist Parish where the local Corps officials announced that the Corps had requested the money necessary to complete this study.

In June, Rep. Richmond sent a letter with Senator Mary Landrieu to the Director of the Office of Management and Budget urging it to approve the Corps request for funding for West Shore.
