Workers push to free ship

Workers on Tuesday continued unloading cargo from a freighter whose hull remained wedged in a delicate coral reef off the coast of Fort Lauderdale, U.S. Coast Guard officials said.

The 34,589-ton Clipper Lasco ran aground on Thursday, and Coast Guard officials want to make sure they don’t add to any reef damage while removing it. The cause of the accident is still under investigation.

Even after much of the cargo is taken off, the ship can’t be moved until the tide is high, Coast Guard Petty Officer James Judge said.

Cargo removal was scheduled to go on through Tuesday night.
