India: Delays at Port Nehru Container Terminal

Delays at Port Nehru Container Terminal

India’s largest container handling facility is experiencing major setbacks in container operation due to the recent collapse of a container crane at Jawaharlal Nehru Container Terminal at Nhava Sheva Port, Port Technology news site reported citing a senior official from Orient Overseas Container Line (OOCL) India.

According to the same source, the terminal is running behind schedule by more than five days.

Apparently the ones troubled the most are the ships pressed by their fixed-day berthing schedule which have been struck brutally by lengthy delays.

Some of them have been left stranded at the outer anchorage, with many more that are scheduled to call at the port soon which might be faced with the same scenario.

OOCL, in charge of linking the Port of Nhava Sheva with ports on the U.S. East Coast, under the Indamex Service vessel-sharing agreement between Hapag-Lloyd, CMA CGM, APL and NYK Line, said that the port still hasn’t been able to restore normal functioning at the terminal.

The overall scope of economic losses of all stakeholders inflicted by the delays cannot be estimated yet, however, having in mind that Jawaharlal Nehru Container Terminal is handling almost 60 percent of India’s containerized cargo the repercussions are far-reaching.
