India: Goa Shipyard Well on Track to Meet Future Challenges

During the year, GSL delivered the 2nd Sail Training Ship INS “Sudarshini” and the 2nd Damage Control Simulator “ Avinash” to the Indian Navy and also launched one 105m Naval Offshore Patrol Vessel.

GSL also received an export business order from the Royal Navy, Sultanate of Oman for training of personnel. In the face of stiff competition with private shipyards, the Company also bagged an order for construction of Pontoons and Service barges from Indian Navy, 6 in Nos. RIBS from Mazagon Dock Limited, Mumbai.

Besides, a 5 Ton Glass Reinforced Plastic Boat was delivered to Sardar Sarovar Nigam Limited, Gujarat.

It may be recalled that Goa Shipyard Ltd. (GSL) has recently signed a contract for the construction of six Offshore Patrol Vessels (OPVs) for the Indian Coast Guard. The contract was signed on 9th May 2012 and the Steel was cut for the first vessel on 14 May 2012.

As part of the ongoing R&D activities and to cater to the Indian defence as well as international market, the in-house design work for 115m Platform, 75m Patrol Vessel and 30m Interceptor Craft is in progress. In addition, enhancement of the current design of 90m OPVs with addition of water jet boosters for attaining higher speeds and conversion of existing hull form designs into more weapon intensive platforms are also in progress.

In order to meet with future challenges, the company is implementing its major Infrastructure Modernization Project in phases. With the commissioning of a 6000t Shiplift and transfer system, GSL achieved the milestone of being the first Defence Shipbuilding Yard in India to be equipped with a modern Shiplift facility for launching and docking of ships. The facilities created under Phase 1 & 2 include hard stand, two land berths, ship transfer area, 250 Mtr. Long jetty, Ancillary buildings housing electrical substations, Shiplift control equipment, Electrical substations and power distribution network and a Shiplift and Transfer System.

The work on Phases 3 & 4 of GSL Modernisation Plan are also well under way. This includes the creation of steel stockyard, steel preparation & fabrication shops, outfitting shops, new land berths, outfit jetty, shipyard cranes & other equipment, other mechanical services and utilities.

Once fully implemented the modernization infrastructure is expected to enhance the present shipbuilding capacity of the shipyard manifold. The future ship construction will use pre-outfitted block building concept with modular construction technique.

Also, at the 46th Annual General Meeting (AGM) of Goa Shipyard Limited (GSL) held on 26 July 2012, the company recorded Value of Production (VoP) of Rs 676 Crore and earned a Net Profit of Rs 83 Crore. The Company declared dividend of Rs 17.17 crore which is equal to 59% of the paid up share capital.
