India: Research Vessel Sindhu Sadhana Acquired

Research Vessel Sindhu Sadhana Acquired

National Institute of Oceanography (NIO) recently acquired new multi-disciplinary Oceanographic Research Vessel RV Sindhu Sadhana.

The vessel, first RV entirely built in India, will leave for a shipyard in Kochi for a few ‘additional fittings’, after which it will take its first experimental cruise in the Bay of Bengal in February, reports Times of India.

The new Oceanographic Research Vessel will greatly enhance the capabilities of Indian oceanographers to make multi-disciplinary observations, with adequate spatial and temporal resolution, enabling them to understand the oceanographic process in the seas around India and to translate this knowledge to benefit the nation.

RV Sindhu Sadhana, built by the ABG shipyard, is one of the ambitious and prestigious projects of the CSIR-NIO taken up at a cost of Rs. 226.51 crores.

The vessel has enough capacity to accommodate 57 persons including 21 scientists.
