Iran to Get Floating LNG Facility in 2017

Iran is set to get its first Floating Liquefied Natural Gas (FLNG) terminal by March 2017, according to Ali Kardor, the vice president for finance and investment affairs of the National Iranian Oil Company (NIOC).

Kardor said that Iran is in talks with an undisclosed Norwegian company on a plan to build the FLNG that would be located in the Persian Gulf, PressTV reports. Under the plan, the Norwegian company is to send an FLNG ship to Iran’s ports in the Persian Gulf by March 2017.

Iran is keen on using the FLNG capacity to boost its LNG exports to Europe and the Far East.

Following the sanctions’ lifting in January, Iran accelerated talks with European counterparts Belgium, France and Germany on construction of LNG tankers, including floating LNG units and floating production, storage and offloading units (FPSOs) as National Iranian Tanker Company was gearing up to enter LNG market.

Iran is seeking to build up a capacity to export 40 million metric tons of LNG a year, according to NITC’s Managing Director, Ali Akbar Safa’ee.
