Itapoa Terminais Portuarios Becomes First Terminal to Go Live with Navis SPARCS N4 in Brazil

Navis, a part of Cargotec Corporation, today announced Itapoá Terminais Portuários went live with Navis SPARCS N4 terminal operating system (TOS), helping Itapoá more effectively manage the large volume of international import cargo and its distribution through coastal shipping to other ports in Brazil and South America.

Itapoá Terminais Portuários, a greenfield site, opened in December 2010 and is the first terminal in Brazil to go live with SPARCS N4 and a related suite of optimization tools. The site is now poised to compete with the most technologically advanced, world-class ports. The solution will support future growth plans, ensure smooth truck flow in and out of the terminal and compete with other high performing terminals in the region. Currently, the terminal can accommodate 300,000 twenty-foot equivalent units (TEU) but expects that to grow to 1.5 million TEUs within the next five years.

“We chose to work with Navis because of their superior track record, customer base in the region and results when compared to competitors’ solutions,” said Sergni Pessoa Rosa Junior, Operations Manager at Itapoá. “SPARCS N4 gives us the software capabilities we require to support future growth as our terminal matures to a modern, world-class port.”

Navis SPARCS N4 is the next generation TOS, allowing customers the flexibility and scalability they need to run their operations at the lowest possible total cost of ownership (TCO). The SPARCS N4 go-live also incorporated an entire suite of optimization tools including Navis PrimeRoute to increase terminal tractor utilization, Navis Expert Decking to fully automate yard positioning and Navis AutoStow to automate vessel planning.

“We recently received Cap San Lorenzo and 906 moves were performed by three gangs with no problems or failures in Navis SPARCS N4. All users were happy and satisfied with the results. All operations were planned with the automatic features from Navis Expert Decking and Navis AutoStow and all trucks were controlled 100 percent by Navis PrimeRoute. There were no problems at all with the RDTs and the documental process, and EDIs were efficiently completed by N4,” continued Sergni Pessoa Rosa Junior.

In the future, Itapoá has plans to expand its relationship with Navis by implementing RTG Commander to optimize and automate rubber tyred gantry (RTG) deployment as well as a crane optical character recognition (OCR) system.

“We are pleased to have our first SPARCS N4 go-live in Brazil, at their newest, state-of-the-art facility, Porto Itapoá. We are confident that SPARCS N4 will support Itapoá’s operations and anticipated growth,” said Bill Walsh, president and CEO of Navis, LLC. “We look forward to seeing the benefits Itapoá experiences with the new TOS and to continue our relationship with them moving forward.”
