Japanese imports of liquefied natural gas (LNG) rose 6.5 percent in February as compared to the same month a year ago, according to the provisional data released by Japan’s Ministry of Finance.

Japan, the world’s top LNG buyer, increased its imports to 8.29 million tonnes of LNG last month, boosted by colder weather and winter demand.

This was the highest import volume since January 2017, the data showed.

Japan’s average price of spot LNG in February was pegged back slightly compared to the previous month.

The contract-based price was at $10.6 per mmBtu, a 3.6 percent decrease compared to the $11 per mmBtu contract-based price in January which was the highest in over three years.
