Japan’s LNG imports down in September

Imports of liquefied natural gas (LNG) by the world’s largest consumer of the chilled fuel, Japan, decreased 3.5 percent in September compared to the same month in 2015. 

Data from Japan’s Ministry of Finance shows that Japan imported 6.67 million mt of liquefied natural gas.

Imports of coal for power generation reached 10.12 million mt, rising 3.5 percent, during the month.

Japan paid about US$2.4 billion for the for LNG imports in August, dropping 40.1 percent on year, according to the ministry’s data.

Earlier this month, Japan’s Ministry of Economy, Trade and Industry (METI) said that less than two spot LNG cargo arrivals were recorded during September, however, the price of spot LNG cargoes contracted in September was at US$5.6 per mmBtu.
