J S Ltd Exhibits Underwater Technology at CANSEC (Canada)

Building on their success in export activity to Canada, Barnstaple based engineering firm J+S Ltd has recently exhibited at CANSEC, Canada’s largest defence and security show, where they demonstrated a range of their underwater defence capabilities.

Attracting strong interest was J+S’ new Echo Sounder (ES800), which is currently being installed across both the surface and submarine fleets of the UK Royal Navy. The ES800 is a dual channel system capable of interfacing to existing transducers and providing high resolution deep and shallow measurements. In addition to conventional depth measurement the ES800 also displays separation data between submarines and surface ice. Information is displayed on local and remote displays and recorded to disk for archive and review. This next generation Echo Sounder is a direct replacement for the existing equipment fitted to the Canadian Victoria class submarines.

The Low Profile Towed Array technology also caught the eye of various naval delegations and commercial companies visiting the J+S stand. This innovative development provides a much smaller equipment footprint and a significant reduction in weight and handling complexity. This enables operators of coastal patrol vessels and smaller naval platforms to benefit from a towed array capability, which was not possible before given the size and space requirements of the previous generations of towed arrays.

Managing Director David Jeffries commented:

“We have been steadily building our business in Canada for a number of years now and Canada is an important strategic market for the company. With innovative new products such as the ES800 and the Low Profile Array coupled with support from Kaycom, I am sure we will continue to grow in the Canadian market over the coming years.”

J+S Ltd operates from sites in Barnstaple and Aberdeen, employing 136 people engaged on a range of engineering and production activities, primarily in naval support, marine renewable energy and subsea asset management for the North Sea Oil and Gas exploration markets.
