Lithuania: Klaipeda LNG ops suspended due to dredging works

Activities at Lithuania’s first LNG import facility in the port of Klaipeda have been temporally suspended due to dredging works in the southern part of the port.

The dredging works aim to clean the ground of the bottom, remove sand deposits and to ensure safe depth for LNG carriers.

This is the second time these works are being conducted since the opening of the LNG terminal in 2014.

Höegh LNG’s FSRU Independence was towed and moored to another jetty at “Klaipėdos Smeltė” on Monday and the vessel is expected to stay there until October 9, a spokeswoman for Klaipedos Nafta told LNG World News on Wednesday.

Lithuania, the largest of the three Baltic nations, started importing the chilled fuel via the 170,132-cbm FSRU Independence in December 2014 in order to reduce its dependence on Russian pipeline gas supplies.

LNG is being imported under a deal Litgas has with Statoil of Norway.
