LNG demand in Brasil to be increased by new power plant

The equivalent of two standard-size LNG cargoes per month, or nearly 215,000 mcf/d of gas is the estimated increase in the LNG demand of Brasil because of the new natural gas-fired power plant at the port Port of Suape, expected to enter into operation in 2019.

“An LNG regasification terminal is needed to make this thermal plant viable,” Leonardo Cerquinho, director of the Suape Port Authority told Pernambuco’s local media outlet, Jornal do Commercio, reports Platts. “We have a limited supply of natural gas here,” he added.

LNG demand in Brasil for electricity generation has increased in recent years, and the 18.4% increase in 2014 in comparison to the first half of last year clearly shows it. Brazil already imported 6,790,974 cubic metres of LNG in 2014.
