Lundin Petroleum: Johan Sverdrup Appraisal Successful (Norway)

Swedish oil and gas exploration an production company, Lundin Petroleum today says the sidetrack 16/2-11A of the appraisal well 16/2-11 has confirmed good quality in Upper and Middle Jurassic reservoir.

The well was drilled some 3.3 km southwest of the discovery well 16/2-6 and 760 metres north east of the 16/2-11 appraisal well. The Johan Sverdrup (previously known as Aldous/Avaldsnes) field is located in licences PL501 and PL265 on the Norwegian Continental Shelf (NCS).

The sidetrack well (16/2-11A) encountered a gross reservoir column of approximately 51 metres of which 35 metres was above the oil water contact. The oil water contact was established and in line with other wells in PL501. A comprehensive coring and logging programme has been performed which confirmed the good reservoir properties in the appraisal well 16/2-11.

The total depth of the sidetrack was 2,365 metres. The wells will be plugged and abandoned.

Lundin Petroleum is using the semi-submersible drilling rig Bredford Dolphin which will now move to PL519 to drill the Albert exploration prospect operated by Lundin Petroleum.  Lundin Norway AS is the operator of PL501 with 40 percent interest. Partners are Statoil Petroleum AS with 40 percent interest and Maersk Oil Norway AS with 20 percent interest.

Johan Sverdrup, located in the North Sea, 140 kilometres west of Stavanger  consists of two discoveries (made in 2010 and 2011) which represent one field. It lies in 110 metres of water, the reservoir being situated at a depth of 1900 metres
