MAIB: Ever Smart Loses 42 Boxes off Japan

The UK Marine Accident Investigation Board (MAIB) has launched an investigation into the loss of over 40 containers from the 2006-built containership Ever Smart.

The incident occurred while the UK-flagged vessel was sailing some 700 nautical miles east of Japan on October 30, MAIB informed, adding that a total of 42 containers fell overboard.

Media reports indicate that inclement weather conditions on the ship’s route in the northwestern Pacific could have lead to the loss of boxes.

Ever Smart was on its way from the port of Taipei, Taiwan to US port of Los Angeles, where it is scheduled to arrive on November 8, according to AIS data provided by Marine Traffic.

The 78,716 dwt containership is managed by the UK-based shipping firm Evergreen Marine.
