Malaysia: Klang Urges DID to Dredge Rivers

Klang municipality urges The Department of Irrigation and Drainage (DID) to maintain the rivers around Pandamaran, to avoid the repetition of last week’s flash floods.

A Klang municipal councilor Lim Lip Suan said: “It’s DID’s job to ensure that the rivers are free of obstruction from debris. Dredge the rivers. Make sure the river banks are not eroded.”

The river flow has been obstructed due to the abundance of litter being thrown into the river and onto its banks. This also caused erosions and has narrowed the channel.

DID is responsible for maintenance works which include dredging of the bottom to remove the litter, reports Selangor Times.

According to Lim, other rivers have also been obstructed by illegal litter dumping. DID had promised to dredge the affected rivers last year but ran out of funds and has delayed the project.
