Meerwind Süd|Ost Wind Farm Officially Opened

WindMW GmbH has officially opened the Meerwind Süd|Ost offshore wind farm in the German North Sea.

The offshore wind farm is located 23 kilometers off the island of Helgoland and consists of 80 Siemens 3.6 MW wind turbines with a total capacity of 288 megawatts.

Construction of Meerwind began in 2012 and was completed on schedule within 18 months.

Jens Assheuer, Managing Director of WindMW, said: “Our Meerwind offshore wind farm will supply 360,000 households with clean electricity. We are pleased that we can thus contribute to a more environmentally friendly energy supply for Germany. I thank all our employees, stakeholders, suppliers and partners for their excellent work with which they have contributed to the realization of our vision. “

Meerwind was the first German offshore wind project to be fully financed by private investors and the first to close under Germany’s KfW financing program, which is focused on helping Germany meet its renewable energy targets by providing debt financing to greenfield energy projects.

The inauguration of the wind farm was celebrated at an official ceremony in Bremerhaven, which was attended by local, state and federal politicians, as well as staff, suppliers and project partners.
