MHI Vestas and CIP Commit to Local Content in Taiwan

MHI Vestas Offshore Wind and Copenhagen Infrastructure Partners (CIP) have signed a localisation agreement for offshore wind projects in Taiwan.

The agreement, said to be the first of its kind in Taiwan between an offshore wind developer and an original equipment manufacturer, will ensure the successful localisation of wind turbine towers – which is mandatory in the local market for projects in 2021 – as well as formalise the commitment for later projects in 2023 and 2024.

“The localization agreement we are signing with CIP is a bold step forward to ensure that offshore wind delivers on its promise in Taiwan,” MHI Vestas co-CEO, Lars Bondo Krogsgaard, said.

”We hope Taiwan will continue to provide a favourable business climate, which provides the necessary foundation for the establishment of our supply chain. We are fully committed with our partner CIP to maximize local supply as much as possible so that Taiwan can reap the economic and environmental benefits afforded by offshore wind.”

MHI Vestas has signed a preferred supplier agreement with CIP and China Steel Corporation (CSC) under which the company will deliver its 9MW turbine platform units for three offshore wind projects with a combined capacity of around 900MW. The projects have been selected by the Taiwanese government in the country’s first offshore wind auction held in April 2018.
