Nautricity to recover tidal turbine for upkeep

Glasgow-based tidal energy developer Nautricity plans to retrieve its CoRMaT tidal turbine for maintenance purposes in the coming weeks.

The company has engaged Orkney-based marine renewables services provider Leask Marine which will be using the C-Odyssey vessel to retrieve the turbine installed at the European Marine Energy Centre’s (EMEC) Fall of Warness tidal testing site.

The operation is scheduled to begin on September 24, and is expected to be completed by October 4, 2017.

The C-Odyssey vessel will be fitted with a custom-made turbine launch and recovery system (TLARS) to recover the turbine that will be transported to Hatston Pier.

Maintenance will be conducted to prepare the turbine for its redeployment.

To remind, Nautricity installed its 500kW CoRMaT at EMEC’s grid-connected tidal site off Orkney in April 2017.

CoRMaT is a contra-rotating turbine which uses two closely spaced dissimilar rotors, moving in opposite directions, to drive the rotor and rotating stator sections of an electrical generator.
