NextDecade scouts Irish FSRU project site

Representatives of the US LNG export player NextDecade held talks with the Port of Cork Company representatives and local stakeholders regarding the proposed FSRU project.

Last month, NextDecade signed a memorandum of understanding with the Port of Cork Company to set up a floating storage and regasification unit and associated LNG import terminal infrastructure in Ireland, named Inisfree LNG project.

The company’s representatives visited the proposed FSRU site location near Whitegate.

The Port of Cork is the world’s 2nd largest natural harbor and benefits from relatively benign metocean conditions. An industrialized energy hub, the south of Ireland is home to 30-40 percent of Ireland’s total energy demand and 20 percent of its overall generating capacity, according to NextDecade’s statement.

The FSRU development’s scale and size is suited to match Ireland’s domestic gas demand and grid capacity while maintaining adequate flexibility to provide opportunities such as LNG bunkering and small-scale fuelling, the company added.

In December last year, NextDecade struck an accord with Flex LNG to develop FSRU and dockside solutions for LNG supply buyers from NextDecade’s Rio Grande LNG export project in Brownsville, Texas.
