Norway: Biota Guard Wins ONS SME Innovation Award

Norway: Biota Guard Wins ONS SME Innovation Award

This is the second time Biota Guard has been nominated for the ONS SME Innovation Award. In 2011 Biota Guard received the award ‘Subsea Upcoming Company of the Year’, which has been established by NCE Subsea and Sparebanken Vest in partnership with CONNECT vest and Underwater Technology Foundation.

Biota Guard develops technology for monitoring water quality related to offshore oil and gas operations. Companies like ConocoPhillips, ENI Norway, GDF SUEZ, Shell, Statoil and Total have contributed on the development and testing of the technology.

 – By using a combination of various sensors, including instrumented mussels, we can measure the contamination of the sea. Continuous health checks of mussels can provide valuable information about water quality in the area around an oil installation, says CEO of Biota Guard, Eirik Sønneland.

International ambitions

Biota Guard is now working to establish R&D collaboration with actors in the Brazilian market. The aim of the research project is to test what kind of shells are suitable as biosensors in Brazilian waters. NCE Subsea has provided funds in the initial phase of the project.
