The largest cruise ship flying the Japanese flag will be fitted with an SOx scrubber during the dry docking, which will include general refurbishing and upgrades.

The NYK Group said it would continue its efforts with improving the Asuka Cruises, which operates the 1990-built, 872-passenger Asuka II. The ship will continue offering cruise experiences emphasizing traditional Japanese hospitality, known as “omotenashi” in Japan.

The installation of a scrubber system onto the Asuka II is in line with NYK’s preparation for the IMO 2020 regulation. Earlier this year, NYK Line secured a USD 80.6 million loan for the procurement and installation of scrubbers onto its fleet.
