Odfjell Drilling’s Deepsea Nordkapp rig named in South Korea

Odfjell Drilling’s newbuild semi-submersible drilling rig Deepsea Nordkapp has been named in South Korea.

The news of the naming ceremony was shared on Tuesday by Kjetil Gjersdal, Executive Vice President, Mobile Offshore Drilling Units on Linkedin.

The rig was previously ordered by Stena Drilling back in 2013, but Stena in 2017 canceled the order claiming Samsung Heavy Industries was unable to complete and deliver the unit within the contractually agreed timeframe.

Odfjell then in April 2018 bought the rig for $505 million and won a contract for it Aker BP. Aker BP awarded Odfjell Drilling a two-year firm drilling contract with 1+1 year optional periods.

According to information on Odfjell Drilling’s website, the rig is scheduled for delivery in the first half of 2019, when it is expected to begin its contract with Aker BP.

The Deepsea Nordkapp is a 6th generation dynamically positioned harsh environment and winterized semi-submersible of Moss enhanced CS 60E design.

The rig is equipped for ATA mooring from 100 meters – 500 meters, and can operate in DP mode in 300 m – 2000m water.
