Oil & Gas UK welcomes Theresa May as Prime Minister

Oil & Gas UK has welcomed the appointment of the Rt Hon Theresa May MP as a leader of the Conservative Party and Prime Minister of the UK.

To remind, after the British people voted to leave the EU in June, the country’s PM David Cameron resigned from his position.

As a trade association for the offshore oil and gas industry in the UK, representing over 450 members across the sector, Oil & Gas UK said it looks forward to continuing its relationship with the UK Government.

Oil & Gas UK‘s chief executive Deirdre Michie commented: “We congratulate the Prime Minister on her appointment and want to work with Mrs May and her administration to ensure a sustainable future for this vital industrial sector that supports hundreds of thousands of jobs.

“Throughout the EU referendum campaign, Oil & Gas UK maintained its political neutrality. We welcome the stability that Theresa May’s appointment can bring and urge politicians of all parties to work together to ensure a smooth transition as we move forward. We will be consulting closely with our members in the coming weeks and look forward to engaging with all governments in representing our industry’s interests.

“The UK Government must continue to support the UKCS as being a competitive place in which to do business.”

“While Brexit raises challenges and opportunities for governments, it is so important that we do not lose focus on the very real difficulties being felt by the sector at this time. The low levels of exploration and development activity on the UK Continental Shelf (UKCS) are of real concern and we need to ensure the basin continues to attract investment going forward. The UK Government must continue to support the UKCS as being a competitive place in which to do business.

“We would also like to take the opportunity to thank the Rt Hon David Cameron MP, for the strong support he gave to the industry during his premiership.”
