Oil production resumes from Eni’s Goliat field in Barents Sea

Eni has restarted oil production from its Goliat field in the Barents Sea, offshore Norway.

Production resumed on Sunday, on 17.12.17. It had been closed since October following the order by the Petroleum Safety Authority to stop production after an audit found serious breaches of the regulations related to electrical systems aboard the Goliat FPSO.

The Italian oil company said on Monday that extensive maintenance and modification work had been conducted during a planned campaign during this fall.

Furthermore, Eni Norge said it had completed work following the Norwegian authorities’ order related to the electrical system issued by the petroleum authority on October 6th.

“During 2017 the company has recorded no major incidents or accidents and strong improvement in HSE performance,” Eni said.

The Eni-operated Goliat field is located in PL 229 in the Barents Sea, 80 km north-west of Hammerfest, Northern Norway. Production from the field started on March 12, 2016.

The project start-up had been delayed several times before starting production early in 2016. However, following the start-up, Eni has been forced on several occasions to close production due to technical issues.

In a statement on Monday, Eni said it was working to further develop Goliat in order to maximize asset value.

“In 2017 the company developed and put in production the Snadd formation, adding 7,5 mboe and plans to drill  two production wells as well as one appraisal well – Goliat West –  in 2018 and has identified further exploration potential in the area. This will contribute to increased recovery rate, additional resources and further improve profitability of the Goliat field,” Eni said.
