Østensjø Rederi cancels vessel deal with Hyundai Heavy

Edda Accommodation, operated by the Norwegian shipping company Østensjø Rederi, has reportedly cancelled its order for an accommodation vessel from the South Korean shipyard Hyundai Heavy Industries over delivery delays.

The shipowner and the shipyard inked the deal for a new mono hull accommodation vessel, plus one optional vessel, in March 2013, and the delivery was scheduled for June 2015.

Johan Rokstad, CEO of Edda Accommodation, told Haugalandnytt, a news website from Norway, that the shipyard failed to deliver on time missing all the extension dates thus giving the company an option to cancel the deal.

The accommodation service vessel Edda Fortis was designed by Salt Ship Design. It is 155 meter long with a total capacity of 800 persons.

The newbuild vessel was supposed to be equipped with a heave compensated telescopic gangway at a length of 45.5 meters, a cargo deck area of 2000 m2 and a 120t rig support crane.

The vessel was meant for construction support and additional living quarters for support personnel during commissioning, maintenance and decommissioning of offshore installations worldwide. The vessel was also designed for operating in artic areas.

Offshore Energy Today has reached out to the Norwegian shipping company seeking confirmation as well as further details about the cancellation, but the company was not immediately available for comment.

In a statement issued late on Tuesday, Edda Accommodation confirmed it has decided to cancel the newbuild Edda Fortis being built at Hyundai’s shipyard in South Korea due to extensive delays.

In related news, the international subsea service provider Reach Subsea said on Tuesday it would reduce its charter agreements with Solstad Offshore and Østensjø Rederi, which would in return become new shareholders of Reach Subsea. Østensjø Rederi will issue five million shares to each of Solstad and Østensjø, while 5m shares will be issued to major shareholders, board members and key employees.

The article has been updated with Edda Accommodation’s confirmation.
