Norwegian oil & gas giant Statoil has reached another milestone as the world’s largest spar destined for Aasta Hansteen field sets sail for Norway.

At 14:30 local time in South Korea the Aasta Hansteen spar left Hyundai Heavy Industries after it was recently floated out and loaded onto the world’s largest transport vessel the Dockwise Vanguard.

The journey is 14 500 nautical miles and should take approximately two months.

According to Statoil, the spar’s first touch point will be in Høylandsbygd, Sunnhordland where it will be floated off the Dockwise Vanguard before it is upended in Klosterfjorden and then towed to Digernessundet.

The complete gas platform will be towed to the Norwegian Sea and the Aasta Hansteen field next year and it is planned to come on stream in late 2018.
